Automate your Co-Curricular Opportunities by adding them right to your events!
At Involve, we’re all about streamlining engagement. Attaching an opportunity to your events is a great way to show highlight the bigger picture of involvement at your campus. Not only does this make it simpler for students to view opportunities connected to the event, but it automates the process so you don’t have to worry about tracking progress to larger programs individually. Once you’ve learned the three main ways to attach an opportunity to an event, you can just sit back, relax, and let the platform do the work!
Using a Pathway
Our Co-Curricular Opportunities can all be connected using Pathways, making them one of the best ways to build out an opportunity. Using a Pathway, you can attach a specific event to the requirements to earn one of these opportunities.
To begin, navigate to the Pathways page on the left side menu of the admin dashboard. If you don’t see the Pathways tab, you may not have the required permission to access it. In that case, you’ll want to connect with a campus administrator to request that permission.
Once you’re on the Pathways tab, you can either create a new pathway or edit an existing one. To add a new pathway, click the add button in the top right corner of the page. To edit an existing one, click the edit button to the far right of the pathway.
In this example, I’ve chosen to create a new pathway, our students will be earning the Anchor Orientation Experience through this pathway.
Now that I’ve determined that, I’m ready to attach my event. Once you have added your opportunity, a field will appear where you can add the conditions that must be meant to earn it. Click on the Condition Type drop-down field. Then select “Attend Event.”
Once you’ve selected “Attend Event,” a new dropdown will appear labeled “Event Name.” This will be a dropdown list of all the events on your campus. Select the event you wish to attach the opportunity to.
Once you’ve selected your event, click the green save button in the top right corner of the page. And that’s it!
You’ve attached an event to this Experience. From here, you can continue adding conditions to the pathway if attending an event is not enough to earn it. Whether you decide to add onto the pathway or not, students will now be able to see how to earn or make progress towards earning this opportunity automatically upon their attendance at the event.
Using a Tag
Another great way to attach an opportunity to an event is to use tags. You will attach the tags to the opportunity using a Pathway, similar to the above method, but first, you need to create your tags. I recommend naming the tag something similar to the name of the opportunity the students will earn. This helps to keep everything organized, and makes viewing analytics clearer as well.
Once your tag is created, you will follow the steps above to either edit or create a pathway. Once you’ve decided what opportunity the pathway will earn, you will click the Condition Type dropdown again. Here’s where it changes! Instead of selecting “Attend Event,” you will select “Attend Event with Tag.”
This will then populate a dropdown menu of all the active tags on your campus. Select the one that corresponds with the opportunity you are granting. A neat feature of using the tag option is that you can require this condition multiple times. This means that a student must attend an event with that tag a certain amount of times before they are awarded the opportunity.
This is particularly useful for opportunities that have a series of events, like Orientation programs. In the following Pathway example, I have required that students attend an event tagged with Anchor Orientation 10 times before they earn the Anchor Orientation Experience.
You can leave this Pathway as is, or add further requirements. As always, don’t forget to click save in the top right corner!
Using the Opportunity Widget
There are two types of opportunity widgets available to use on the Event Registration form. The first is called the Opportunity widget and requires no set up on your part. You just need to have points and service hours enabled on your campus. It will appear as a drop down menu where you can select either points or service hours to attach to the event.
Once you have selected which opportunity you want to award to attendees, you will be prompted to add more details. For points, it will ask what kind of points you wish to be awarded, and how many. For service hours, it will just ask how many.
When you attach points or service hours in this way, they will be automatically awarded to the student upon check in to the event!
The second type of widget is called the Opportunities to Earn Widget. To access this widget on your Event Registration form, you must have a Pathway where attending an event with an opportunity attached is required.
Once this condition is saved on a Pathway, the Opportunities to Earn widget will automatically appear on your Event Registration form. From here, you can select either the Experience or Skill you’d like attached to the event using the dropdown menus that will populate.
If your Event form does not have the Opportunities to Earn widget, or one of the opportunities does not appear, it is most likely because a pathway that requires the attendance of an event with the opportunity you’re looking for has not been set yet.
Events are such a great way to get students involved. Adding an Opportunity to those events only heightens student engagement. Using the methods detailed above, you will be able to automate the process of adding Opportunities to events, making it easier than ever to enhance your students’ co-curricular learning.
