How can I let budgets have a negative balance?

Go Negative in Finance

The Go Negative feature allows budgets to have negative balances.

This is useful for institutions that want to allow spending beyond available balances, such as when expenses are expected to be covered later (for example, reimbursements, pending deposits, or timing differences between spending and funding).

When to use this feature

  • Allow spending before funds are deposited
  • Support reimbursement-based workflows
  • Handle timing gaps between expenses and funding

How to enable Go Negative

  1. Go to Finance.

    Navigate to your Finance dashboard.

  2. Open Tools.

Select the Tools tab at the top of the page.

  3. Toggle on Go Negative.

    Enable the Go Negative setting.

  4. Click Update.

Select Update to save your changes. If you toggle the setting on but do not click Update, the change will not be saved.

Important note

Enabling this feature allows budgets to drop below $0. Make sure your institution’s financial policies support this behavior before turning it on.
